A small town named Sambhar is situated on Jaipur- Ajmer artery. The town is renowned for its lake, which has been a great source of salt for so many years. 'Sambhar' according to Hindi terminology means 'salt'. The city was named as 'Sambhar' due to its saline lake.
The Sambhar Lake is the largest lake of India (length 22.5 kms). The lake was owned by various rulers during their reigns over the region. In 1870, this beautiful saline lake was leased to British, and now it is owned by Government of India. The lake is divided into sections, and offers a visit to salt laboratory and salt museum.
Sambhar lies at a distance of 60 km from Jaipur. And also comprises other attractions such as temples. As a tourist you can get this opportunity to visit such a legendary place and admire its beauty. The lake is a preferred home for birds, and offers a magnificent look of resident and migratory birds.
